Dr. Terrence Sejnowski

Francis Crick Professor at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies
Computational Neurobiology Laboratory University of California, San Diego

terence1111Terrence Sejnowski is a pioneer in computational neuroscience and his goal is to understand the principles that link brain to behaviour.

In his studies, he has developed computational models and new analytical tools to understand how our brain takes in and processes information which are important in learning.

He has published over 500 scientific papers and 12 books, including The Computational Brain with Patricia Churchland. He is a member of the Institute of Medicine, National Academy of Sciences and the National Academy of Engineering, one of only 10 living persons to be a member of all 3 national academies.

Terrence received his Ph.D. in physics from Princeton University and was a postdoctoral fellow in the Department of Neurobiology at Harvard Medical School and on the faculty at the Johns Hopkins University. He is now an Investigator with the Howard Hughes Medical Institute and holds the Francis Crick Chair at The Salk Institute for Biological Studies.  He is also a Professor of Biology at the University of California, San Diego, where he is co-director of the Institute for Neural Computation and co-director of the NSF Temporal Dynamics of Learning Center.

Terrence is also the President of the Neural Information Processing Systems (NIPS) Foundation, which organises an annual conference attended by over 2000 researchers in machine learning and neural computation and is the founding editor-in-chief of Neural Computation published by the MIT Press.

He was instrumental in shaping the BRAIN Initiative that was announced by the White House on 02 April 2013, and served on the Advisory Committee to the Director of NIH for the BRAIN Initiative.

Dr. Barbara Oakley

Professor of Engineering Industrial & Systems Engineering,
Oakland University University of California, San Diego

barbara-oakleyBarbara Oakley, Ph.D., P.E., is a professor of engineering at Oakland University in Rochester, Michigan, and writer of international acclaim.

Barbara grew up believing that her brain was just not wired for Mathematics and Science. Having failed them consistently throughout her school years, she struggled constantly to grasp these subjects and loathed them.

As she returned to school at age 26 to study engineering for her career development, she became intrigued by the amazing power of our brain in learning, unlearning and relearning content.

Now, as one of the world’s leading authorities in the Science of Learning, her research focuses on the complex relationship between neuroscience and social behaviour. Barbara’s research has been described as “revolutionary” in the Wall Street Journal—she has published in outlets as varied as the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences and The New York Times.

Barbara’s books have been praised by many leading researchers and writers, including Harvard’s Steven Pinker and E. O. Wilson, and National Book Award winner Joyce Carol Oates.

Her latest book: A Mind for Numbers: How to Excel at Math and Science (Even If You Flunked Algebra), a New York Times best-selling science book, has open new doors on how to learn mathematics and science more easily and with less frustration.

Prior to her academic career, Barbara rose from private to captain in the U.S. Army, during which time she was recognised as a Distinguished Military Scholar.

Barbara was designated as an NSF New Century Scholar—she is also a recipient of the Oakland University Teaching Excellence Award (2013) and the National Science Foundation’s Frontiers in Engineering New Faculty Fellow Award. She is an elected Fellow of the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering.
